American Press Institute and Newseum celebrate Newspaper In Education Week, March 4-8

Arlington, Va. – The American Press Institute and the Newseum are partnering to celebrate Newspaper In Education Week March 4-8. Held annually during the first full week in March, NIE Week emphasizes the use of newspapers as educational resources in classrooms across a range of subjects.

For NIE Week, the American Press Institute is providing curriculum guides for teachers of all grade levels that cover topics such as media literacy, ethics, fairness and newsgathering. Each lesson is designed to meet Common Core State Standards and includes instructional objectives as well as a list of materials and resources. The guides are available for free download on the API website.

The Newseum provides teacher resources in its Digital Classroom, a multimedia, interactive, cross-disciplinary toolkit for teachers and students that offers high-quality digital media content in a curriculum-based structure for middle, high school and college classes. The flexible and interactive material – offered in conjunction with the Newseum’s Education Department – meet national standards of learning and give students a deeper understanding of the five freedoms of the First Amendment.

“With so many sources of news and information at their disposal, young people more than ever need to be educated media consumers,” said Tom Rosenstiel, executive director of the American Press Institute. “This curriculum is designed to help educators accomplish that. It makes use of original, professional journalism produced by local newspapers and combines it with the Newseum’s educational resources for something that is timely, real and proven in schools.”
