The LA Times’ plan to grow its audience: New beats and new platforms

As the Los Angeles Times has faced turmoil in its business recently, the newspaper is looking to create new beats and expand to new platforms to grow its audience. The LA Times announced earlier this year that Dexter Thomas was hired to cover Black Twitter, which managing editor for editorial strategy S. Mitra Kalita says is part of its strategy of “identifying communities of interest that form around content” and content that forms around communities that the LA Times can tap into. As far as other new beats the LA Times will add, Kalita says there’s “an opportunity in framing broader stories through the California lens and achieving audience in our state and throughout the world.”
