The benefits of an engaged online professional community, like news developers

The North by Northwest student group, for example, open-sources its code, which helps for ideas, inspiration and feedback. And when you’re somewhat isolated (such as in a small town, the only developer at a news org, or in a dorm room), interacting in an online community can yield answers and also help publications spot talent.
