Why aren’t more women running media companies?

There’s an imbalance in the number of male and female CEOs in media, Jeremy Barr writes. Even at female-focused media outlets such as Refinery29 and Bustle, those companies are led by men. But in order for there to be more women CEOs, Vivian Schiller says more women have to be in that role already: “The more women CEOs there are, the more women CEOs there will be … It’s about bringing up the next generation, and modeling what a female executive is and what a female CEO looks like.”

+ A lack of female CEOs is far from a problem exclusive to journalism: A new study from McKinsey and LeanIn.org shows that men are promoted at 30 percent higher rates than women in their early career stages, and just 19 percent of C-suite roles are women (McKinsey)
