Sensitive but strong coverage of suicide

I like lots of things about this piece by Will Doolittle and the stories from the Post-Star in Glens Falls, NY. I like that this little paper didn't shrink from tackling the sensitive subject of suicide. Too many newspapers are too timid in coverage of one of the biggest causes of death in any community. It demands sensitive coverage (another thing I liked about the Post-Star package). I liked the teamwork, the planning, the interactive connection with readers. I liked the stories.

For some good reading, check out Dick Weiss' list of "Best Stories You've nEver Read".

Finally, a self-serving plug for API's upcoming Storytelling Innovations seminar. I'm proud of the program we have put together for this seminar. It will help you connect with audiences on multiple platforms. This program won't be in Reston, but at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications Conference Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, October 2-5, 2007.

Some of the topics we will cover: crowdsourcing, mobile journalism, multimedia storytelling, telling the fast-breaking story, the full-range of digital storytelling opportunities, narrative writing and alternate story forms.

Discussion leaders will include: Pulitzer Prize-winner Jim Sheeler of the Rocky Mountain News; multimedia producer Regina McCombs of StarTribune.com; new products editor Tim Richardson of WashingtonPost.Newsweek Interactive; online editor John Jackson of Roanoke.com; Publisher Skip Foster of The Star in Shelby, N.C.; Mackenzie Warren, managing editor of information distribution at The News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla.; reporter and fashion guru Michael Quintanilla of the San Antonio Express-News, mysanantonio.com and WOAI television; Online Editor Janet Chasse of yumasun.com.

Please not that you get a 10 percent tuition discount if you register and pay by this Friday, August 3. Register here.

I hope to see you in Minneapolis.
