Among my New Year's resolutions: Do writing tips more regularly. All fall long, it's been one of those things I meant to do next week. I want to call your attention to Chip Scanlan's touching tribute to Don Murray, the first newspaper writing coach. I never met Murray, but I learned a great deal from his writing and from Chip and others who learned from him first hand. And from Chip's tribute.

I also call your attention to an older piece by Michael Weinstein, on the art of short storytelling, about Brady Dennis and his prize-winning "300 Words" series.
