Writing Tips A reporter looks back with some regrets
By Steve Buttry May 18, 2006 10:36 AM George Rede, a friend who is director of newsroom recruitment and training for The Oregonian, recently encountered to a woman he had covered 30 years ago when he was a young reporter in Bend, Ore., and she was bludgeoned with an ax. She has written a book about her experience, including her search for the attacker, who was never charged. George tells about her case and his regrets: I wish I had done more to write about the Cline Falls attack as more than just a crime story. I wish I had thought to report with more context to the broader issue of random violence. I wish I had thought to interview the crew of young emergency room nurses who saw themselves in Terri Jentz and her college roommate. He shares more wishes, but read them in context here.
