SECTION V

  • REFLECTIONS ON THE SURVEY

Key Points:

  • Women need support; they are extremely stressed when they do not have support in the workplace.

  • Women who display feminine traits are in greater conflict over whether they are going to get ahead.

  • When women leave, newspapers lose a more varied, less conventional point of view

Questions:

  • What is support? What does it include? (Look at training, coaching and mentoring. Are different perspectives encouraged, respected?)

  • What does it mean that women need support to succeed? (Discuss newspaper policies and procedures. Look at the written and unwritten codes of behavior about working overtime, working from home, family time, and reimbursable expenses.)

  • What are the newspaper's informal networking and mentoring opportunities? (Do these opportunities revolve around typically male activities? Do women have a vehicle for getting together around more female pursuits?)

  • What is gained/lost by incorporating women's talents into the newsroom?
