API to Offer Innovative Seminar for Women
March 08, 2004
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Reston, VA - An innovative seminar exclusively for women news media
executives will be offered this spring at the American Press Institute. Noted anthropologist and author Helen Fisher, whose celebrated book, The
First Sex, summarized her extensive research on gender differences in the
brain and in behavior, will be the special guest for the program, to be held
May 16-20, 2004, at API in Reston, Virginia. Authenticity - The RetreatTM for Women Media Executives is
the first professional development opportunity of its kind offered to women
media executives. It is a highly experiential program for women who want to
learn new ways of leadership that leverage their strengths. The program is designed and conducted by CorporateHOPE, Ltd. It has been
specially tailored for women in leadership positions in all news media
organizations, including newspapers, magazines, broadcast and Internet
publishing. It is modeled on CorporateHOPE's general-session Retreats for women
business executives. "It's increasing obvious that the unique strengths of women leaders enhance
our industry and our newspapers," said Andrew B. Davis, president and executive
director of API. "At API we're committed to helping women maximize those
strengths and empowering them to create environments where women leaders can
thrive." This special offering of Authenticity-The RetreatTM expands
on an API effort launched in 2002 to support and empower women editors. That year, a survey commissioned by API and the Pew Center for Civic
Journalism revealed disturbing trends within the industry regarding retention
and advancement of women news executives. In the survey of top newspaper
editors, just one in five of the female editors said they definitely want to
move up in the newspaper industry, and almost one in two anticipated a fresh
start, saying they expected to leave either their company or the news business
entirely. In 2003 with funding from Gannett Foundation, API produced "Women, Men and
Newsroom Leadership," a video featuring Fisher and her research. Tuition for Authenticity - The RetreatTM for Women Media Executives
is $2,800. The hotel and meal package is $1,000. For more details or to register
