API News Releases API Associate Director Earns Human Resources CertificationJanuary 23, 2001RESTON, VA -- Mary Lynn Martin, an associate director of the American Press Institute, recently earned certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR). The certification, awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI), signifies that Ms. Martin possesses the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in human resource management necessary to pass a rigorous examination demonstrating a mastery of the body of knowledge in the field. To become certified, an applicant must pass a comprehensive examination and demonstrate a strong background of professional human resource experience. "This certification of Mary Lynn as a human resources specialist underscores the great intellectual and experiential strength that exists in API's programming staff," said William L. Winter, Ph.D., president and executive director of API. "The deep expertise of this staff is what lends such power to the learning experiences offered through the Institute's programs." Ms. Martin designs and facilitates leadership- and management-development seminars for newspaper executives, including API's upcoming Human Resources Management seminar. For the past two years, she directed an Internet-based learning project, Seminars Online, for API. Her newspaper experience includes work in sales, management and training at the St. Joseph (Mo.) News-Press, the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune and the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times. A graduate of the University of Missouri, Ms. Martin is a member of the American Society for Training and Development and the Society for Human Resource Management. An experienced presenter and trainer, she has developed and delivered management workshops for many journalism organizations, including the Newspaper Association of America and the American Copy Editors Society.
The HRCI is the credentialing body for human resource professionals and is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human resource profession. The Institute's purpose is to promote the establishment of professional standards and to recognize professionals who meet those standards.
Founded by newspaper publishers in 1946, the American Press Institute is the oldest and largest center devoted solely to training and leadership and management development and skills training for newspaper professionals and journalism educators. The Institute, housed in a Marcel Breuer-designed building in Reston, Virginia, conducts more than 30 week-long residential seminars a year and develops custom training programs on content, values, organizational structure and processes, leadership and management. The Institute now is accepting online registrations for its 2001 seminars.
