The Media Center

Our Mission is Simple

We help online and multi-platform "convergence" news companies improve. If you work in Internet or convergence media, we can help you do better work.

We help individuals enhance their skills, knowledge and capabilities, and we help digital news companies achieve greater success with better-trained, more knowledgeable people.

We're not-for-profit, dedicated to promoting excellence in the online and convergence news industry.

We can provide training in small-scale seminars we schedule throughout the year or in customized programs tailored to the needs of individual companies.

All News, All Platforms
Newspapers. Magazines. TV. Web. Cable. WAP. iMode. iTV. Our seminars and custom services are appropriate for any news organization involved in Internet publishing and multi-platform media convergence, including online, wireless, print and broadcast news companies, vendors that serve online and wireless news companies, universities and journalism schools, and foundations.

We Know News.
We Know Digital News.

Founded by newspaper publishers in 1946 at Columbia University, the American Press Institute is the oldest and largest center in the world devoted to mid-career, management and executive training and improvement for the news industry and journalism educators.

API is a private, independent, not-for-profit training center headquartered outside of Washington, DC, supported by individual and corporate sponsors, foundations and seminar tuition. Since 1997 The Media Center at the American Press Institute has provided the renowned API experience to the online news industry.

With funding from the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, The Media Center produces intensive learning experiences for new media professionals affiliated with any organization, including newspapers, TV, cable and stand-alone online and wireless publishers.

We know the creative, business, technical and ethical challenges they face are daunting. Our programs foster the innovation and reflection they require to succeed.

Our small-scale, intensive seminars are carefully developed for online news CEOs, executive producers and senior content, sales, marketing, corporate and business development managers.

The Media Center has organized groundbreaking seminars on the First Amendment in cyberspace, online classifieds, media convergence, journalism integrity in the information age and data standards for news content - an effort that spawned the development of News Markup Language.

The Media Center focuses on the creative, technical and strategic challenges of conceiving, gathering, packaging and delivering online news and information.

Throughout the year The Media Center also helps traditional media managers adapt to life in the digital world. Every American Press Institute residential seminar includes a workshop on digital media.
