API Fellowships

NOTE: The application deadline for fellowships for 2008 seminars is Friday, Nov. 2, 2007.


API awards fellowships to journalism educators and newspaper employees to use in attending API seminars.

Thousands of dollars are available to applicants from the United States and Canada. These fellowships are financed through the generosity of individuals, organizations and trusts.

To apply for an API Fellowship:

  1. Review and select a fellowship from the list below.
  2. Select an API seminar from the seminar schedule. Please note the following seminars are not eligible for API Fellowships:
    • Executive Development Programs
    • Strategic Leadership
    • Any of the Newspaper Next or Learning Newsroom one-day workshops, or any Webinars
  3. Download and print out the fellowship application form.
  4. Fellowship applications must be submitted by U.S. mail. Please mail a separate application for each fellowship along with a supporting letter of documentation from the candidate's supervisor or academic department chair and a copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae.

API Fellowships for College-Level Journalism Educators

The James H. Ottaway Fellowship honors the late chairman of Ottaway Newspapers Inc. and member of the API Board of Directors. It covers tuition, hotel and meals.

The Philip S. Weld Sr. Fellowship honors the late owner of Essex County Newspapers in Massachusetts. It covers tuition, hotel and meals.

The Rollan D. Melton Fellowship honors the late Reno Gazette-Journal columnist, president of Speidel Newspapers and API Board member. It is open to college-level journalism educators who are members of a recognized minority group, and covers tuition, hotel and meals.

The Minority Journalism Educators Fellowship is open to college-level journalism educators who are members of a recognized minority group, and covers tuition, hotel and meals.

API Fellowships for Newspaper Employees

The Cissy Patterson Fellowship is a memorial to the owner of the now-defunct Washington (D.C.) Times-Herald. Open to female reporters or editors from newspapers with daily circulation below 25,000, it covers tuition, hotel and meals.

The Edmund C. Arnold Fellowship honors the distinguished newspaper-design consultant who led more than 220 API seminar discussions. Mr. Arnold received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute in 1999. The fellowship provides tuition, hotel and meals for Visual Storytelling for Print and Web.

The James H. Ottaway Jr. International Fellowship covers tuition, hotel and meals (and sometimes travel expenses) to publishers, editors and other key newspaper executives in emerging democracies. IAPA applicants may download the application form here.

The John E. (Jack) Heselden Fellowship honors the longtime newspaper executive and retired deputy chairman of Gannett Co. Inc. For newspaper executives interested in marketing or general management, it covers tuition, hotel and meals.

The Malcolm F. Mallette Fellowship honors a former executive director of API. It provides tuition for a news editor or managing editor of a newspaper with daily circulation under 50,000. Please inquire which 2008 seminars are eligible for funding through the Malcolm F. Mallette Fellowship.

The Walter Everett Fellowship honors a former executive director of API and covers tuition for a city editor or supervising content editor. If funds permit, it also provides a travel allowance.

NAA Minority Fellowships

API cooperates with the Newspaper Association of America Foundation to make NAA Minority Fellowships available for API seminars. The foundation sets eligibility requirements and makes awards independently. To download the application, click here.
