Jim MaxwellAssociate Publisher, Southeast Missourian & VP of Operations, Rust Communications
In July of this year, Mr. Maxwell arrived in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to assume the positions of associate publisher of the Southeast Missourian and vice president of operations for Rust Communications. On January 1, 2010, he will move into the position of vice president and chief operations officer for Rust Communications, a privately-owned media company comprising 18 daily and 33 weekly newspapers and 18 shoppers in eight Midwestern states. Prior to joining Rust, Mr. Maxwell spent 14 years working for Ottaway Newspapers, the community media group of Dow Jones & Company, a division of NewsCorp. He served as the corporate director of advertising, working out the company’s New York office, before moving in 2006 to the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he served as president and publisher of the Pocono Record. The Pocono Record was featured in the Newspaper Next 2.0 report for the multimedia and cultural transformation of their newsgathering and delivery operations. Before moving to New York he worked for four community newspapers on the West Coast, including Ottaway’s Medford and Ashland, Oregon, properties. Mr. Maxwell has attended several API seminars including Newspaper Next 1.0 in 2006, Executive Development in 2005, and Revenues and Costs in 2003.
