Matt Mansfield![]()
Matt MansfieldDeputy Managing Editor, San Jose Mercury News
Mr. Mansfield is one of two Deputy Managing Editors for the San Jose Mercury News. Mr. Mansfield has a unique role: He oversees the paper's well-known business and technology coverage, as well as the design, graphics, and photography for the news organization, which is based in the heart of Silicon Valley. The editors and reporting staffs in those areas work closely with him every day to set a coverage agenda. Mr. Mansfield considers himself lucky: He gets to cover the most interesting business stories anywhere as he and his staff navigate the new global economy, the twists and turns of the tech industry, and the amazing rebirth of the center of innovation in America. The Society of American Business Editors and Writers last year awarded the Mercury News a "Best in Business" award for overall excellence in business coverage for the seventh year in a row. No other newspaper has won the award for more consecutive years. Mansfield has also won more than 100 design and editing awards from the Society for News Design and the “Merc” has been judged a World's Best-Designed Newspaper. He currently serves as secretary/treasurer for the Society and will be SND's president in 2009. Under his guidance, the Mercury News’ photo staff was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for its coverage of the California recall election that swept Arnold Schwarzenegger to power. And last year, the multimedia Web site, www.mercurynewsphoto.com, was recognized for overall excellence by Pictures of the Year International. Mr. Mansfield has been at the paper since 2000 and has also directed the state, national and foreign reporting staffs at the Mercury News. He has also worked in management roles at The Times of Northwest Indiana and The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill.
