Michael Schwartz
President, Business Power

Mr. Schwartz has been involved in newsroom training since 1995, when he was named training editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Subsequently his training responsibilities were broadened to include training and staff development for all Cox Newspapers. The centerpiece of his training activity was Cox Academy, a learning program that focused on developing training sessions for Cox Newspapers journalists. It included on-site workshops at several Cox Newspapers and the Cox Washington Bureau, as well as a Distance Learning Program, in which “virtual” classes were conducted with participants from several Cox Newspapers via Web seminars.

He has presented training sessions to a wide range of audiences – from college newspaper editors to Scandinavian journalists. He has been a guest speaker at the American Press Institute, the Poynter Institute, the Colorado Press Association, the Virginia Press Association and the National Press Club. He specializes in high-impact, interactive sessions filled with practical, relevant skills training that can be immediately applied on the job.

During his journalism career he has been a reporter or editor at the Detroit Free Press, St. Petersburg Times, Charlotte Observer, Dayton Daily News, Atlanta Journal, Long Beach (Calif.) Press-Telegram and Atlanta Constitution.

In 2008 he left Cox Newspapers to start his own company, Business Power, which focuses on business communication and presentation skills.
