Bernard A. Niemeier Jr.
Vice President/Planning & Research

Since 1990, Mr. Niemeier has served on the corporate staff of Media General, Inc., where he is the Vice President of Planning and Research for the Publishing Division.  In this capacity, he has coordinated due diligence on acquisitions during Media General’s growth from three to 25 daily newspapers in the Southeast. He is also responsible for strategic planning and the research efforts of the company’s publishing division.
Mr. Niemeier’s newspaper career began at the age of 12 as a newspaper carrier.  In 1977, shortly after his college graduation, he began his professional career as a circulation district supervisor.  Before joining the Media General’s corporate staff, he served as the Circulation Marketing and Research Manager for Richmond Newspapers, Inc.
Mr. Niemeier is a native of Richmond, Virginia.  He attended secondary school at the Northfield Mt. Hermon School in Northfield, Massachusetts and is a cum laude graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota with double majors in English and Psychology.  He also holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Richmond.
Mr. Niemeier has published articles and letters in the Newspaper Research Journal, Presstime, the Journal of Media Economics, and AsTech On-line.  He has attended management development programs at the American Press Institute and Northwestern University's Media Management Center.
His professional affiliations have included the American Marketing Association, the Newspaper Association of America’s Board Committee on Industry Development, the Marketing Committee of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, the NAA’s Newspaper Value Symposium and Scarborough Research’s Newspaper Advisory Board.
