A Free Press journalist since 1973, Mr. Cruden has worked as a copy editor and slot in features and news, and as national and foreign editor, assistant city editor and executive news editor.

He began copy editing at night at the Utica (NY) Daily Press in 1967, while a student at Hamilton College. After graduation and two more years at the Daily Press, he worked as a copy editor and slot in 1970-73 at the Providence (RI) Evening Bulletin. A charter member of the American Copy Editors Society, Mr. Cruden has led more than 100 seminar sessions for copy editors and other journalists, including 12 at API. He attended API's Reporting the Developing Countries seminar in 1981.
