Monica MosesConsultant
For more than 20 years, Ms. Moses has been an innovator, change leader and pain in the patootie of various news organizations. Most recently she directed an elite team of creative and business professionals in the creation of niche websites and magazines for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. In her Product Innovation role, she was also drove innovation strategy for the company. Before she led niche products for the Star Tribune, she led an intensive, three-year campaign to reinvent the newspaper, making it warmer, more surprising and easier to digest for disparate reader segments. The 2005 reinvention led to two consecutive spikes in readership and more awards from the Society for News Design than any other redesign in 2005. Ms. Moses came to the Star Tribune from the Poynter Institute, where she taught leadership, collaborative storytelling and visual journalism for four years. Before her time at Poynter, she served in various visual leadership roles at other news organizations, including The Charlotte Observer, where she led a dramatic transformation in the mid-1990s. As a consultant, Monica has worked with dozens of news organizations, including the Newspaper Association of America, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Associated Press and others, on such tough issues as changing reading habits, conflict resolution in newsrooms and re-engineering the work processes that keep newspapers from putting media consumers first. Ms. Moses has judged more than a dozen journalism competitions over the years, including the Pulitzer Prize. Recently she was named one of 25 "Women to Watch" by the Business Journal of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Her work as a designer and visual editor has been recognized by Print magazine, the Society for News Design, the National Press Photographers Association and a number of other professional associations. Many of her essays on leadership, work relationships and visual communication can be found at monicamoses.com.
