Free Webcast Puts Spotlight on Bloggers, Journalism, Activism and Election 2004
|
Reston, VA – Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, FOXNews.com executive editor Stephen Bromberg and representatives of Rock the Vote, BET.com and Washingtonpost.com will meet online Oct. 5 for a discussion about the effects of interactive media on political dialog and the 2004 U.S. presidential election. The webcast, called “We Media: The Impact of Participatory Media on Election 2004,” will take place over the Internet on Tuesday, October 5, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET. The webcast is free, but participation is limited. Jason McCabe Calacanis, chairman and co-founder of the Weblogs, Inc. Network, will host the webcast, a public online conversation presented by The Media Center, a think tank at the American Press Institute that explores the intersection of media, technology and society and opportunities to create a better-informed society. Other members of the panel will include Washingtonpost.com political columnist Dan Froomkin; Retha Hill, vice president of content development for BET.com; and Jehmu Greene, president of Rock the Vote Foundation. CBS’s experience with bloggers has put the spotlight on independent voices on the Internet. Interactive media, the spread of new communications technologies, and innovations in older technologies are allowing users and audiences — voters — to fact check, voice opinions and engage in activism. Through blogs, interactive sites and other emerging forms, online, independent voices have joined the opinion-making media and it’s a segment increasingly vocal and influential. How have user attitudes and behavior combined with technology to create new avenues for sharing information? Who is participating in the audience-creation of media? How is political dialog and activism being altered? Does the electorate feel more empowered? Are people better informed? The webcast will address these questions and more.
