John McIntyre has worked on the copy desk at The Sun in Baltimore since 1986, successively as rim editor, slot editor, deputy chief of the copy desk, chief of the copy desk and, since May 2000, assistant managing editor for the copy desk. He had previously been a copy editor at The Cincinnati Enquirer. He holds an undergraduate degree in English from Michigan State University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a master’s degree in English from Syracuse University, where he was a university fellow from 1973 to 1976. He abandoned an uncompleted doctorate in 18th-century literature and resorted to editing in 1980. He has taught copy editing at Loyola College in Baltimore since 1995. A charter member of the American Copy Editors society (ACES), he has served two terms as its president. He has presented workshops on writing and editing at the all the national ACES conferences, at the National Writers' Workshops, at the American Press Institute, at the Poynter Institute, and at more than a dozen and a half newspapers and news organizations in the United States and Canada. His book reviews and articles have appeared in The Sun, The Christian Science Monitor and The American Editor and at Poynter.org.
