Reflecting on leadership lessons from the battlefields of Gettysburg

Colonel Goulding received a BA (History) from the University of South Carolina in 1971 and graduated from The Basic School the following year. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the 3d Marine Division and served as a rifle and weapons platoon leader in the 9th Marine Regiment.

In 1973, Col Goulding was assigned to Headquarters, U. S. Marine Corps (Manpower), followed by attendance at Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico, VA. After graduation from AWS, he served as a rifle company commander and S-4 of 3d Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

From 1980 to 1981, Col Goulding was Aide to the Commanding General, III Marine Amphibious Force, Okinawa, Japan, followed by assignment as Marine Officer Instructor at the University of Oklahoma NROTC Unit. In 1984, he returned to Quantico for Marine Corps Command and Staff College.

In 1985, Col Goulding was ordered to the 2d Marine Division as Executive Officer, 1st Battalion, 2d Marines; later, Commanding Officer, Special Purpose MAGTF UNITAS, and Assistant Chief of Staff G-3 (Assistant Operations Officer).

He served on the Joint Staff (J-3) from 1988 until 1991, when he was assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade as Commanding Officer, 3d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment; later, MEB Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3.

From 1993 to 1995, Col Goulding was Commanding Officer, Marine Barracks Japan, in Yokosuka. This was followed by assignment as a Fellow, Strategic Studies Group at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. In 1996, he became the Director of Concepts Division at the Quantico-based Marine Corps Combat Development Command. His final assignment was Senior Marine Corps Representative at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA.

Col Goulding retired in 2001 and is currently the Director of Sea Viking, Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, Quantico, VA.

He holds an MA (History) from the University of Oklahoma; personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (Gold Star in lieu of Second Award), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal
