Phil Currie
Senior Vice President/News, Gannett Company, Inc.

Mr. Currie is a member of Gannett's Newspaper Operating Committee. He joined the corporate staff as director of news-staff development in 1977. He was named vice president/news for community newspapers in 1986, vice president/news for the newspaper division in 1989, and assumed his current role in May 1995. Mr. Currie chaired the brainstorming group that developed the NEWS 2000 program. He began his career in 1964 with the Times-Union in Rochester, New York, where he worked as a general assignment reporter, editorial writer and executive city editor. On the city desk, he directed coverage of the Attica Prison riots that led to a Pulitzer Prize for the newspaper. In his current position, Mr. Currie also oversees operations of the Gannett News Service. He holds a B.A. degree in journalism from the University of Iowa and an M.A. degree in journalism from Penn State University. He has been a member of the API Board of Directors since 1999. Mr. Currie has attended three API seminars: City Editors (1972), the 2001 J. Montgomery Curtis Memorial Seminar on "Journalism Credibility in the Information Age," and the 2002 Curtis Seminar on "Women in Newsroom Management."
