For good writing, it's a matter of time

Mr. Stasiowski is an independent writing coach based in Baltimore. He graduated in 1970 with a degree in English from the University of Nebraska. He served four years as an officer in the U.S. Navy, then worked on a farm in Nebraska.

He started his newspaper career in 1976 as the night photographer for The Breeze, a 5,000-circulation daily in Cape Coral, Florida. In his nearly seven years there, he held a variety of jobs: country reporter, city reporter, columnist, editorial writer, city editor, sports editor, managing editor and writing coach. In 1982, he moved to The Columbian, a 50,000-circulation daily in Vancouver, Washington, as a general-assignment reporter specializing in politics. Mr. Stasiowski also wrote a twice-weekly humor column and worked part-time as a writing coach.

In 1989, he moved to Baltimore, his hometown, and started his coaching business. He has coached reporters at newspapers and magazines in dozens of states. He has been a discussion leader at the American Press Institute and has conducted seminars at for the Inland Press Association and at the Wilmington Writers Workshop. Each year, he speaks to groups of writers and editors at journalism conferences around the country. He writes a monthly coaching column that appears in more than two dozen newspaper-associations publications.
