The American Press Institute was founded in 1946. It was housed at Columbia University’s Journalism School before moving in 1974 to Reston, Va.
The Newspaper Association of America Foundation was established as the ANPA Foundation in 1963 by the board of directors of what was then called the American Newspaper Publishers Association. It became the NAA Foundation in 1992, upon the merger of the ANPA and INMA foundations.
In early 2012, the API and NAA Foundation boards voted to merge the NAA Foundation into API. The merger was finalized on February 6, 2012.
The new entity, located at NAA’s headquarters in Arlington, Va., retains the API name. Its purpose is to educate constituencies about the value of newspapers and to provide training, research and best practices for newspaper industry executives.
