ARLINGTON, Va. – The American Press Institute announced today Jeff Sonderman is joining the organization as deputy director. Sonderman was most recently the digital media fellow at The Poynter Institute and previously worked as the managing editor of TBD.com, a digital news operation in Washington, D.C.
As deputy director, Sonderman will explore how digital technology can be used to develop additional revenue sources for news media and to create new best practices for newsgathering. He will act as a liaison to training partners, including Poynter, and help shape the research and educational work of the American Press Institute.
“Jeff has a superb combination of digital skills, organizational ability, writing talent, deep journalism values, and a genuinely innovative mind,” said Tom Rosenstiel, executive director of the American Press Institute. “Those talents have earned him a reputation as a thoughtful voice in journalism. I can think of no one better to help navigate the continued transformation of the American Press Institute.”
At Poynter, Sonderman helped journalists understand the trends, innovations and strategies of digital news. He will continue to teach as an adjunct faculty member at Poynter. He also is on the adjunct faculty of Georgetown University.
A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Sonderman began his career as a business writer at The Times-Tribune in Scranton, Pa., where he rose to become business editor, metro editor and internet content director. At TBD.com, he moved from senior community host to managing editor.
