A management-skills seminar for your most promising future leaders

They may be young and technically savvy. Or they may be new to newspapers. You brought them on board to shake up your organization, and now you’d like to give them greater management authority.

Moving from colleague to supervisor can be a challenge at any time, but it is especially daunting in today’s shifting media landscape – when the traditional stepping stones to management may no longer exist in your leaner, flatter organization.  And so much is at stake.

Research tells us that great frontline managers are the key to attracting and retaining talented employees who can move companies forward.  Senior media executives repeatedly say that smart, networked “digital natives” will be the ones to solve the industry’s problems – but are they adequately prepared to build a team, coach and develop others, and create the strategic alliances they will need to lead effectively?

API can help you develop your next generation of frontline managers.

In this two-day program, participants will learn what it takes t

  • Identify priorities and effectively manage limited time and resources
  • Work collaboratively across departments and generations
  • Initiate crucial conversations with supervisors, peers and staff in order to gain clarity, build alliances and overcome resistance to change
  • Develop the confidence and self-awareness required to lead in these complex times.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Leading Change.  Today’s news organizations are transforming themselves. Visionary leadership is required at all levels – especially on the front lines of management, where bold, new strategies must be implemented. In this session, you’ll learn what it takes to get your team on board and new initiatives up and running.
  • Managing Across Generations. From Baby Boomers to Millennials, each generation has its own attitude and style, which can lead to misunderstandings. In this session, you’ll develop a better grasp of the values and motivations of different generations and the demographic trends that impact the way we work today. With these insights, you can find ways to get optimal performance from everyone in your organization.
  • Managing Time and Resources.  What are the top things you can do to get yourself organized so you can focus on what’s really important? We’ll focus on the strategies and tools you need to save time, energy and money so that your team can work efficiently to accomplish its goals.
  • Managing Performance. As a manager of other people, one of your fundamental responsibilities is to help your direct reports make daily decisions that support department, division and company goals. In this session, you’ll learn how to build a culture of accountability, in which every individual feels committed and responsible for your organization’s success.
  • The Challenge of Decision-Making.  Decision-making is full of potential pitfalls and is seldom easy. The best decisions are based on information. But as a manager, how do you know what information is most relevant to your decision? How do you evaluate information supplied by others? How can you avoid the pitfalls of decision-making “from the gut”? In this case study-based session, you will experience the challenge of making a “go/no-go” decision without perfect knowledge.
  • Straight Talk About Leading Your Team. In this free-ranging roundtable discussion, two tech-savvy media managers open up about the challenges of leading people in today’s news organization. This is where we talk about the real fundamentals of working effectively with and through others. Come prepared to ask your most pressing questions.
  • What’s Your Style? Newspaper culture has been identified as one of the most aggressive/ defensive corporate cultures – not a good thing in an era that requires innovation, collaboration and rapid response to change. Discover your thinking styles, how they influence the culture you help create in your organization and what you can do to create a more constructive workplace.

Who should attend: Promising staff in editorial, advertising, marketing and circulation who are being groomed for formal or informal management roles and those who have recently been promoted.
