Presented in partnership with The Poynter Institute
Resource-strapped newsrooms are finding creative ways to deliver quality content, from working with local bloggers, tapping into social networks and outsourcing editorial functions, to partnering on regional coverage and working with nonprofits and universities.
Learn to pinpoint the opportunities, navigate the pitfalls, and hear from pioneering journalists who have launched successful initiatives to expand their abilities to provide top-notch news and information.
Newsrooms may be shrinking, but creative leadership and the smart use of technology can ensure a vibrant future for news organizations.
Who should attend: Executive editors, managing editors, online editors, and newsroom leaders at all levels.
THE PROGRAM
Monday, March 22
Newspapers and the Link Economy – Buzzmachine blogger, City University of New York journalism professor and author of “What Would Google Do?” Jeff Jarvis challenges newspaper companies to do what they do best and link to the rest. The work he has done at CUNY on New Business Models for News envisions a new news ecosystem, with traditional news organizations playing a shrinking role. His beyond-the-newsroom thinking will help shake complacencies that are hampering traditional journalists’ abilities to optimize their success.
Newspapers and Local Bloggers: A Powerful Partnership – Director of Global Blog Development for GlobalPost and consultant John Wilpers has created a successful business working with newspapers and other media to integrate high-quality bloggers into their print and online products. Learn the secrets of using high-quality, citizen-generated content to actually extend your reach and relevance, getting buy-in from your staff (who may see this move as an excuse to cut even more jobs), and expanding your presence in the community.
Sharing Resources, Sharing Stories – Plain Dealer Editor Susan Goldberg has been a leading voice in the Ohio News Organization, a cooperative formed in 2008 by the state's eight largest daily newspapers. In addition to finding efficiencies, sharing stories and conducting several joint polls, the ONO recently completed its first joint-reporting projects. Find out how Ohio assessed the opportunities and what it takes to manage a successful statewide partnership across newspaper companies.
Tuesday, March 23
Leading the Virtual Newsroom – Poynter’s Butch Ward and API’s Mary Glick lead participants in a discussion of the challenges of and opportunities in the “link economy.” What are the best strategies for outsourcing integral newsroom functions like copy editing and reporting? How are editors managing relationships and workflow? How can editors ensure that outside content adheres to accepted standards for quality, fairness and transparency?
The Strategic Newsroom – Gannett Vice President Jennifer Carroll has grappled with the tough questions in helping to launch ContentOne, the companywide initiative to find efficiencies, end duplication, guide major event coverage and identify new ways to use content across multiple platforms. They are the same questions newsrooms both large and small, both independent and group-owned, continue to face: How can you really do more with less? How do you reduce or eliminate repetitive tasks? How do you trade quantity for quality? What is the unique coverage you’re willing to invest in?
The First Amendment in the 21st Century – If anyone can make a 200+-year-old constitutional amendment come alive for today, it’s First Amendment Center founder John Seigenthaler and Freedom Forum President Kenneth Paulson. Following a visit to the Newseum, seminar participants will participate in this lively exploration of free expression, which is both educational and entertaining. The First Amendment session is the highlight of any API residential seminar.
Wednesday, March 24
Working with Nonprofit Watchdogs – Since founding the Center for Public Integrity in 1990 as a nonprofit center for investigative reporting, Charles Lewis has worked with dozens of news organizations that have published the work of nonprofit journalism organizations. Today he is executive editor of the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University and has helped create the Investigative News Network of more than 20 – and growing – nonprofit news publishers from around the country. Learn how working together with investigative non-profits can benefit traditional newspapers.
API is pleased to welcome Lingospot as the sponsor for Tuesday’s seminar lunch. Lingospot's software platform helps some of the world's largest news publishers manage their content distribution and aggregation more efficiently
