MONDAY, Jan. 28

Newspaper Next: Seminar moderator Mary Glick will reveal the latest research from API’s blueprint for newspaper transformation.

Ethics in a 24/7 News World: API’s director of tailored programs, Steve Buttry, will delve into the dilemmas editors face when news is published around the clock.

Who’s Defining News in a Digital World? The news agenda changes when readers are in charge, according to research by The Project for Excellence in Journalism. The Project’s director, Tom Rosenstiel, will share the results of that research and the implications for journalists competing for audience online.

Jobs in the New Newsroom: Carl Hunnell, managing editor of the News Journal in Mansfield, Ohio, one of Gannett Inc.’s Information Centers, will outline the process he went through to restructure the newsroom and create new job descriptions.

Where To Begin: First Steps for Transformation: Mary Fran Gleason, managing editor of the Times Union in Albany, NY, shows how "process mapping" can help you transform your 20th century news assembly line into an agile 21st century multi-platform news operation.

Workout Workshop: Participants meet in small clinic groups to tackle the step-by-step process of transformation.

The Breaking News Blog: Mike Gangloff, reporter for the Roanoke Times in Roanoke, Va., site of the Virginia Tech shooting in April that killed 33 students, shares lessons learned about this powerful tool for delivering news as it happens.

Mining the Community: Ju-Don Roberts, managing editor of washingtonpost.com, one of the true pioneers in social networking, will walk us through the tools this site uses to connect with audiences, from live discussions and databases to its latest FaceBook applications.

A Vision for the Future of News: Two years ago, USA TODAY and usatoday.com integrated print and digital operations. In this session, Editor Ken Paulson shares his vision for moving his newsroom forward.

Case Studies: The Integrated Newsroom. Newspapers in the process of integrating print and Web operations – large, mid-size and small -- will outline their visions for a full 24/7 multimedia news report, the steps for getting there, progress that’s been made, challenges and surprises along the way and lessons learned.
