Frontline editors: They’ve been called the “guardians of the culture.”
More than any group in the newsroom, they can make or break any effort to bring news into the digital age.

Today’s frontline editors need to appreciate the essential role they play in moving their newsrooms into the future. Theirs has been called the toughest job in journalism – and they need the tools to do their best work.
They need to get their teams on board and new initiatives up and running – without missing a beat in the day-to-day news cycle.
They need to know what it takes to manage change effectively.
This intensive three-day seminar is designed to give them proven strategies for managing today’s newsroom transformation.

Who should attend:
City and metro editors, feature and lifestyle editors, business editors, sports editors, design and photo editors, editorial page editors, news editors and other assigning editors and frontline newsroom managers

Participants will gain:

  • Practical tools for managing the human dynamics of change
  • Proven strategies for overcoming resistance to change – their own and that of their staffs
  • Techniques to implement change initiatives quickly and successfully
  • Real-life lessons from the Learning Newsroom and Newspaper Next on what it takes to create a work environment focused on innovation and growth.

THE PROGRAM:

Day 1

A proven process for leading change
Change is a process that takes place in predictable stages. Participants learn about the forces that drive change and how to carry out a successful change strategy.

A blueprint for transformation
The lessons of API’s Newspaper Next drive home the need for a new kind of audience-focused newsroom leadership that knows how to innovate. Participants learn to apply key concepts to their own change initiatives.

Succeeding in a collaborative newsroom
What stands in the way of getting word editors, reporters, photojournalists, and online managers to work together?  Newspaper consultant Richard Weiss gives participants a look at how media companies have broken down the walls.

Change workshop
Consultant and comedian Bob Orvis takes participants outside of their “comfort zones” to explore the all-too-human side of change in this energizing, enlightening and hilarious exercise.

Day 2

Making change happen - fast
Author Jerald Jellison will outline a new model for implementing change and give participants a chance to gain skill at using a set of practical tools to put to work immediately to speed the process of any change.

Having the difficult conversations
When you’re talking change, three distinct conversations -- with the boss, with peers and with subordinates --- can be treacherous. Managing Editor Jean Marie Brown will provide the guideposts and uncover landmines that can easily be avoided.

The First Amendment
Participants will rediscover the vitality of freedom of expression in the U.S. in an entertaining and inspiring session on the First Amendment led by John Seigenthaler and Ken Paulson.

Day 3

Thinking styles and the challenge of change
Using the Life Style InventoryTM , a unique self-assessment tool, participants will discover how their thinking and behavior patterns impact their ability to lead change effectively and identify the best role they can play in this time of newspaper transformation.

Participants also will take away a personalized blueprint that includes a step-by-step process for planning and implementing change in their newsrooms.
