Session: Stop Managing What's Past and Start Planning the Future

The Future is Local.

Weekly newspapers are the heart and soul of their communities – both a mirror to reflect everyday life and a candle to illuminate it.  And since “hyperlocal” has become a key driver of success, weekly newspapers are ideally positioned to thrive.  But how do leaders at weekly newspapers inspire vision and deploy resources to keep their products vibrant, relevant and profitable in this disruptive media environment?

Join the American Press Institute for it seminar Management of the Weekly Newspaper as we tackle all the tough leadership issues weekly newspaper executives face.  The seminar, which takes place July 16-21, 2006, at API’s campus in Reston, Va., will send you home armed with the knowledge and the strategies to capitalize on all the opportunities for growth your market offers.

Here is just a sample of the critical areas we’ll cover:

  • Day 1: Strategy, Leadership and People - Gain a framework for planning and allocating resources beyond just getting the paper out every week; understand your leadership style and the work styles of others in your organization; and learn ways to recruit, engage, empower and retain outstanding employees.
  • Day 2: It’s All About the Revenue - Ways to maximize revenue everywhere: existing products, new product opportunities, online strategies, even the way your media kit and rate card are put together.
  • Day 3: Metrics for Success -You can’t improve what you don’t measure.  We’ll spend the morning using the Inland Survey of Weekly Newspaper Operations to learn which measurements are really critical to success, and how to use those measurements to drive strategic decisionmaking.  Seminar attendees are strongly encouraged to register for the Inland survey in order to derive maximum benefit from this session.  More information is available at www.inlandpress.org.
  • Day 4: Content That Connects - Come away with strategies to protect and grow your local information franchise, both in print and online.
  • Day 5: Putting it All Together -You’ll put together a detailed, practical action plan to address your biggest challenges and to chart an integrated course for sustained growth.

In addition, we’ll spend the afternoon at the Freedom Forum in nearby Arlington, Va., in a lively and interactive session on the First Amendment, led by venerated journalist and First Amendment expert John Seigenthaler.  And, like all API seminars, this one will offer the opportunity to work in small groups on some of the unique issues that every weekly newspaper organization faces.
