Design for Contemporary Newspapers is a week-long seminar for visual journalists who want to design their products to meet readers’ changing information needs. The Society for News Design is co-sponsoring this seminar, January 15-20, 2006, at API’s campus in Reston, Virginia.

A focus of this seminar is innovation and collaboration. Members will be challenged to connect with their communities with more impact and creativity through interactive exercises and a collaborative workshop inspired by a visit to the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. (www.nmai.si.edu).

This program is developed for designers, graphic artists, photographers and design editors as well as copy editors and section editors extensively involved in the design of their newspapers. Visual journalists will return to the newsroom prepared to create more visually compelling publications that attract readers and provide an enhanced, unified brand experience and that connects the print product to the Web site.

• Create compelling storytelling packages using words, photos, graphics and design in a team of collective idea-making.
• Balance limited resources and improve your newsroom’s story planning, collaboration and communication.
• Communicate content by thinking about its visual presentation, news worthiness, storytelling structure and the layering of complex data.

Attend Design for Contemporary Newspapers and bring a colleague to the concurrent seminar Compelling Storytelling Innovations for only $1,875 ¬– that’s the discounted price for one tuition!
